Bringing Compassion and Fairness to New York’s Wrongful Death Law
💔 The Problem
New York’s wrongful death law is 177 years old — one of the most outdated in the nation.
Today, if someone dies because of negligence or wrongdoing, their loved ones can only recover economic losses like:
- Lost wages
- Funeral and medical costs
That means no compensation for grief, heartbreak, or loss of companionship — and no justice for families of children, seniors, stay-at-home parents, or others without income.
⚖️ The Grieving Families Act: What It Does
The Grieving Families Act (GFA) modernizes this unjust law to finally recognize the real human cost of wrongful death.
It would:
✅ Acknowledge Emotional Harm
Allow families to recover for grief, anguish, loss of love, guidance, companionship, and support.
✅ Expand Who Can Recover
Include close family members — not just spouses or children, but also:
- Domestic partners
- Step-parents & foster parents
- Grandparents, siblings, and others who acted as parents or caregivers
✅ Extend Time to File Claims
Lengthen the statute of limitations so families have time to mourn and pursue justice.
✅ Reflect Modern Families & Values
Recognize that love and loss aren’t defined by income or traditional family structures.
🌟 Why It Matters
- Dignity: Every life has value — not just those tied to earnings.
- Accountability: Wrongdoers should face full responsibility for the harm they cause.
- Equity: Families of children, seniors, and caregivers deserve the same justice as anyone else.
- Compassion: The law should see the people behind the statistics.
🗣️ Voices for Change
- Lawmakers across party lines have championed this reform.
- Advocacy groups and civil rights organizations call it a long-overdue act of compassion.
- Over 40 other states already allow recovery for emotional loss — New York lags behind.
🚀 Take Action
